New Westminster is taking another step to protect residents from extreme heat, becoming one of the first municipalities in the region to require safe indoor temperatures in rental housing.

City council has approved a new bylaw requiring landlords and property owners to ensure that at least one room in a rental unit remains at or below 26°C overnight, between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., from April 1 to October 31 each year.

The bylaw was introduced in response to growing concerns about extreme heat events and their impact on vulnerable residents. The move builds on previous city action that prevented landlords from banning cooling devices such as portable air conditioners in rental units.

According to the City, the devastating 2021 heat dome claimed the lives of 33 New Westminster residents, highlighting the importance of improving heat safety measures in residential buildings.

Property owners can choose the cooling solutions that work best for their buildings, including portable air conditioners, thermal curtains, window films, fans, air sealing improvements, and HVAC maintenance.

The new regulations are intended to help ensure renters have access to safer indoor temperatures during increasingly hot summers.

💙 The Quiet Heroes Among Us: A Father’s Day Reflection

This Father's Day, we're taking a moment to celebrate the dads, grandfathers, stepdads, and father figures who help make New Westminster the wonderful community it is.

Behind many of our city's everyday moments is a dad lending a helping hand, offering words of encouragement, or simply showing up when it matters most.

You might spot them coaching a soccer game at Queen's Park, teaching a child to ride a bike along the waterfront, volunteering at a community event, or proudly cheering from the sidelines at a school concert. Often, they're the first to offer support and the last to ask for recognition.

Fatherhood isn't always about grand gestures. More often, it's found in the small moments—a reassuring hug after a tough day, a patient lesson learned, a shared laugh around the dinner table, or a quiet sacrifice made out of love.

Many of us carry memories of fathers who taught us life's most important lessons: how to be kind, how to work hard, how to stand back up after a setback, and how to care for the people around us. Their influence often shapes who we become long after we've grown up.

Today is also a day to remember and honor those fathers who are no longer with us but whose love and guidance continue to live on in our hearts and memories.

As we celebrate Father's Day, we invite our readers to take a moment to reach out to a father figure in their life—whether that's with a phone call, a visit, a shared meal, or simply a heartfelt "thank you."

"To all the dads and father figures in our community—thank you for your guidance, your sacrifices, and your love. Happy Father’s Day, New Westminster!" 💙
