What if your emotions could dance? On June 18, the New Westminster Secondary School (NWSS) Dance Department brings Outside In to life — a bold and beautiful production that turns growing up into a moving masterpiece.
At the center of it all is Riley, a young dancer on the verge of her biggest moment yet. But just as the spotlight finds her, so do her emotions — from joy to fear, nostalgia to excitement — all fighting for their own moment to shine. Can they work together when it matters most?
Outside In uses powerful choreography, bursts of humor, and a whole lot of heart to tell a story everyone can relate to. It’s a colorful, creative take on the messiness of growing up — embracing change, finding your voice, and staying true to yourself.
Expect vibrant performances, relatable moments, and an emotional journey that dances right through the heart. With NWSS’s talented dancers leading the way, this is more than a show — it’s a celebration of youth, identity, and expression.

As British Columbia endures an early heat wave, concerns are rising over sweltering conditions inside New Westminster’s school portables—temporary classrooms that currently lack air conditioning. With more than 1,000 students using these units daily, two local school trustees are pushing the provincial government for immediate funding to install proper cooling systems.
New Westminster’s school district operates 53 portables, and while some are equipped with rooftop AC units, activating them would require costly upgrades to the area’s power infrastructure. The estimated cost to outfit all portables with air conditioning is $1.3 million, but this figure may be even higher due to economic factors such as tariffs linked to past U.S. trade policies.
The urgency of the issue is being underscored by the lived experiences of students. Many, like eight-year-old Frankie Kwong, are finding it difficult to concentrate in overheated classrooms, even with fans in use. The discomfort not only impacts learning but also raises broader concerns about the long-term effects of climate change on the education system.
Trustees and education advocates argue that cooling systems in classrooms should be seen as a necessity, not a luxury. One trustee is urging the provincial government to prioritize funding for ventilation and air conditioning in school infrastructure, especially in portables that were never designed to handle extreme heat.
While the B.C. Ministry of Education points to billions of dollars invested in school upgrades over the past several years, and it has redirected responsibility for the issue to the Ministry of Infrastructure. Officials state that while significant funding has gone toward HVAC upgrades province-wide, school districts are ultimately responsible for managing their own facilities.
As the debate continues, students remain stuck in overheated classrooms, with no immediate relief in sight.
