In New Westminster, a small group of neighbours is building a bigger conversation about the future.
The New West Climate Action Hub began with just a dozen people who shared a simple idea: local communities can play a powerful role in climate solutions. Less than three years later, the group has grown to more than 40 active members and over 140 supporters who stay connected through email updates and events.

Is this the group for you? - Volunteer Today
What makes the group different is its tone. Instead of focusing on doom and sacrifice, the Hub promotes a hopeful message about innovation, healthier homes, and a future that works better for everyone.
As Karen Crosby, president of the Hub explains, the goal is simple: โOur vision for the future is a positive oneโฆ itโs an upgrade, not a downgrade.โ
That optimistic mindset is drawing people from across New Westminster who want to learn, connect, and take practical action close to home.
The Story Behind the Hub
The New West Climate Action Hub started as a grassroots initiative led by residents who wanted to help their city move toward cleaner energy and healthier living.
From the beginning, the focus has been on collaboration. The group works closely with the City of New Westminster, meeting regularly with councillors and climate staff to share ideas and discuss solutions. Those conversations help connect community voices with local policy.
The organization officially incorporated as a nonprofit in the spring of 2025. Funding comes from grants (including one from our city!), and donations from members and supporters who believe in its mission.
Those contributions help support events, workshops, and public outreach that make climate solutions easier for people to understand.
And the Hub is growing fast.
Its members include people of all ages, from high school students to retirees. That mix of perspectives helps create lively discussions about how todayโs choices affect the next generation.
For many participants, thinking about children and grandchildren is a powerful motivator.
Events That Turn Curiosity into Action

One of the Hubโs biggest events is the May 02, 2026 Sustainable Homes Info Session Day, a free community event where residents can visit homes and see climate solutions in real life.
Participants can walk through neighbourhood homes and explore upgrades like heat pumps, solar panels, and energy-efficient kitchens. They can also talk directly with homeowners about their experiences.
Itโs a hands-on way to learn.
Visitors can join guided bike tours between participating homes, attend short information sessions, or play a climate solutions game designed for families.
The Gardening workshops are especially popular, focusing on topics like growing food in small spaces and creating gardens that support biodiversity. Some sessions will focus on how to make your home more climate resilient and adapts to impacts like wildfire smoke and atmospheric rivers.
The goal is to make learning practical and accessible for everyone โ including condo owners and apartment residents who want to reduce their environmental impact and be safer.
A Community Conversation
Beyond major events, the Hub stays active across New Westminster throughout the year.
Members host free talks at the library, participate in local festivals like Riverfest, and run educational booths at community markets.
The group also welcomes public input. Many events include open discussions where residents can share ideas about how the city can move toward a cleaner future.
Itโs all part of building a stronger local conversation about climate solutions.
And the tone stays upbeat.
โWeโre a group of local neighbours working for a cleaner, healthier future where nature and our community can thrive,โ one organizer says.
A Philosophy of Hope
For the New West Climate Action Hub, climate action is not about giving things up.
Itโs about improving everyday life and improving the future.
New technologies such as electrification, solar energy, and efficient heating systems are making homes more comfortable and more affordable to run.
Many of these solutions also improve air quality indoors and outdoors.
Instead of focusing on problems, the Hub highlights the possibilities.
The message is simple: better technology, healthier homes, and stronger communities are all part of the same future.
Get Involved in New West

For residents curious about climate solutions, the New West Climate Action Hub offers a welcoming place to start.
Events are free, conversations are friendly, and newcomers are always welcome. Whether attending a workshop, touring a sustainable home, or volunteering at a festival booth, there are many ways to get involved.
From practical learning to inspiring conversations, the Hub is helping neighbours across New Westminster imagine what a cleaner future could look like โ and how to build it together.

A months-long investigation into a stabbing in Queensborough has resulted in four individuals facing charges, including an 18-year-old New Westminster resident.
Police were called to the 800 block of Ewen Avenue around midnight on August 1, 2025, following reports of a fight. Responding officers located a man suffering from stab wounds and provided emergency first aid before he was transported to hospital.
The case was taken over by the Major Crime Unit, which spent several months gathering evidence and executing search warrants. In February, charges were approved against four individuals in connection with the incident, including robbery, assault with a weapon, and aggravated assault.
Due to legal protections, the names of three of the accused are not being released. However, 18-year-old Arman Rajani has been identified among those charged.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances of the incident, including any potential relationship between the suspects and the victim.
Itโs finally here โ the New West Farmers Market returns this Thursday, bringing fresh flavours, local vendors, and vibrant community energy back to Tipperary Park.
The market runs every Thursday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., featuring 50+ vendors each week, including farm-fresh produce, artisan goods, food trucks, live music, and more.
Opening Day is packed with fun, including welcome remarks from local leaders, plus family-friendly activities like face painting, scavenger hunts, and a piรฑata. Be sure to arrive early โ the first 100 visitors will receive free treats, and a silent auction featuring over $2,000 in local goods will be running throughout the day.
The popular Stamp Card Program is also back, with double stamps on opening day and a chance to win $50 in Market Money.
Itโs also Membership Appreciation Day, with exclusive discounts for members.
Whether you're shopping local, grabbing dinner, or just enjoying the atmosphere, thereโs no better way to kick off your Thursday in New West.
