New Westminster is gaining recognition as one of Metro Vancouver’s standout food destinations, thanks to a growing stretch of restaurants along Columbia Street. Recently highlighted as an “Eat Street,” this area is earning attention for its variety, walkability, and strong community feel.
Within just a few blocks, visitors can explore nearly 30 food spots offering flavours from around the world. From casual favourites like sandwich shops and cafés to unique dining experiences like Korean bowls, Brazilian street food, and customizable hot pot, there’s something for every taste. The mix reflects the diversity of the region while keeping a distinctly local vibe.
The area also features well-loved restaurants such as El Santo, known for its modern take on Mexican cuisine using fresh, local ingredients, and Piva, which offers elevated Italian dishes. These spots are helping position New West as a place where high-quality dining meets a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
What makes Columbia Street especially appealing is its character. Heritage buildings, small independent businesses, and a compact layout make it easy to spend an entire evening walking from place to place. Locals describe it as having a “small-town feel” — something increasingly rare in the Lower Mainland.
Ongoing development in the area, including new waterfront towers and improved infrastructure, is expected to bring even more energy downtown. At the same time, business owners say New West offers something larger cities can’t: a true sense of community connection.
As Metro Vancouver continues to evolve, recognition like this helps New Westminster stand out. It’s not just about great food — it’s about creating a vibrant, local experience that keeps people coming back.
A powerful symbol of hope will light up New Westminster later this month.
On the evening of April 23, City Hall will glow green as part of the national “Light the Night” campaign — raising awareness and showing support for the more than 6 million Canadians experiencing fertility challenges.
Running overnight until the early hours of April 24, the green lighting serves as a quiet but meaningful reminder that many individuals and families are navigating this journey — and that they are not alone.
Led by Fertility Matters Canada, the initiative brings communities across the country together through a shared message of support, understanding, and compassion.
In New Westminster, the illuminated City Hall stands as a local expression of that support — inviting residents to pause, reflect, and stand in solidarity.
