May Day in 2021 / Photo via New West May Day Website
New Westminster’s cherished May Day celebration returns on Saturday, May 24, 2025, marking 155 years of tradition, community spirit, and joyful pageantry. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Queen’s Park Stadium, families, children, and residents will gather for one of the most enduring and vibrant cultural events in Canada.
First celebrated in 1870, New Westminster’s May Day predates British Columbia’s entry into Confederation and the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Over a century and a half later, it continues to flourish, proof of its deep cultural roots and community-wide support. UNESCO, the world’s leading education and cultural body, officially recognizes the event as an expression of “Living Culture”—a tradition that remains vital and relevant because the people of New Westminster continue to breathe life into it, year after year.
At its heart, May Day is a free spring celebration—a joyful blend of music, dance, pomp, and ceremony. The event is especially designed with children in mind. From the classic Maypole dances performed by local students to the chance to meet new friends and enjoy a shared sense of community, May Day offers intangible benefits that go far beyond entertainment. It creates connections, nurtures belonging, and reinforces just how special it is to call New Westminster home.
This legacy has inspired other communities across British Columbia, with similar May Day celebrations in Port Coquitlam (101 years) and Fort Langley (102 years). But New Westminster remains the originator—the first, the longest-running, and the heart of May Day tradition in the province.
So what exactly is May Day? It’s a stadium-sized celebration of spring, community, and joy. It’s an old-fashioned good time that still feels alive. And it’s a powerful reminder that heritage lives on when a community chooses to celebrate it together.
Visit the official May Day website for full event details and how to get involved!
As the curtains close on the unforgettable production of The Revolutionists, Vagabond Players are excited to welcome audiences to their next comedy hit, The Ladies Foursome by renowned Canadian playwright Norm Foster. Directed by Miles Lavkulich, this lively and heartwarming production runs from July 10 to 27, 2025, at The Bernie Legge Theatre in New Westminster.
Bringing this witty story to life is a talented cast featuring Carol Mann as Margot, Jill Menkveld as Dory, Karryn Ransom as Tate, and Katherine Morris as Connie. Audiences will join these four women on stage as they navigate a humorous and revealing round of golf the day after the funeral of their friend Cathy.
What begins as a simple tribute quickly turns into a spirited game filled with laughter, confessions, and personal revelations. As the women discuss love, relationships, family, and the challenges of life, secrets begin to surface, making for an entertaining and heartwarming journey inspired by Norm Foster’s The Foursome.
Performances take place Thursday through Saturday at 8:00 PM, with Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM. Preview performances are scheduled for Thursday, July 10, and Friday, July 11, giving audiences an early opportunity to catch this sure-to-be-popular production.
Produced by Dwayne Campbell and stage managed by Al Zylstra, The Ladies Foursome promises to deliver laughter and heartfelt moments that will resonate with audiences long after the final bow.
Tickets are already on sale at www.vagabondplayers.ca/tickets. With demand expected to be high, theatre lovers are encouraged to book early to secure their preferred seats..
