British Columbia’s political landscape has shifted dramatically following the 2026 provincial election, with the BC Conservatives securing a majority government and interim leader Lorne Doerkson positioned to become the province’s next premier.

According to CityNews Vancouver’s election coverage, the Conservatives delivered a decisive victory over incumbent Premier David Eby and the BC NDP, marking a major turnaround for a party that had faced significant turmoil.

The reported result signals a substantial change in provincial leadership, with the Conservatives gaining enough support to secure a majority in the legislature. The election coverage describes the outcome as a two-thirds majority for the party.

Meanwhile, Eby has announced plans to resign as BC NDP leader following the failure of his snap-election gamble, according to the report. His departure would mark a significant moment for the NDP as the party begins to consider its future direction after losing power.

The election results are being tracked across several regions, including Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, the Interior and Northern B.C. However, the published seat counts include both elected candidates and those leading in their races, meaning totals could still change as results are finalized.

With a new government expected to take shape, attention will now turn to the Conservatives’ transition into power and the political decisions that will shape British Columbia’s next chapter.

A frightening encounter near Nanaimo Street ended without injuries after New Westminster police arrested a man accused of threatening a family with a machete following a noise complaint.

Police say the incident happened around 6:15 p.m. on October 17, 2026, near the 1100 block of Nanaimo Street. A resident called the New Westminster Police Department after reporting that their family had been chased by a man carrying a machete.

The caller helped the family reach safety while providing officers with real-time updates on the suspect’s location.

Responding officers located the man near a residential building, where he confronted police while holding the machete. Officers used de-escalation techniques, and the suspect eventually dropped the weapon and was taken into custody. No injuries to the public or police were reported.

Roman Seregin of New Westminster has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon. He has since been released with multiple conditions and is expected to appear in court.

Police credited the caller’s timely updates and officers’ communication and de-escalation efforts with helping bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

The New Westminster Police Department is reminding residents to leave an unsafe situation if possible and call 911 immediately. Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dash-camera footage that could assist investigators, is asked to contact police at 604-525-5411.
