New Westminster will come together on November 11 to honour the brave Canadians who gave their lives in service to the country during the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony at the City Hall Cenotaph.

Hosted by the City of New Westminster in partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Westminster Regiment, the free public ceremony will take place Wednesday, November 11, from 10:25 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 511 Royal Avenue.

The morning begins with wreath pickup on the City Hall front lawn at 9:30 a.m., followed by parade assembly at the corner of Queen’s Avenue and Sixth Street at 10:15 a.m. The outdoor service begins at 10:25 a.m.

Residents who cannot attend in person can watch the ceremony live on the City of New Westminster’s YouTube channel. A sign language interpreter will also be present at the service to support accessibility.

The city is reminding residents to plan ahead for traffic changes. Road closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. along sections of Royal Avenue, Sixth Street and Queens Avenue, with additional parking restrictions during the morning. An accessible parking and passenger pickup and drop-off area will be available on Royal Avenue, east of Seventh Street.

The Q to Q Ferry will begin service at 9 a.m. on Remembrance Day for those travelling to City Hall by ferry.

Community partners and volunteers, including Legion members, the Last Door Recovery Centre, Girl Guides of Canada and the 12th New Westminster Scouts Group, are helping make the ceremony possible.

Whether attending in person or watching online, residents are invited to pause, reflect and remember the sacrifices made by those who served.

Could a piece of New Westminster’s Victorian-era history be saved through community action? Residents are being invited to discuss the future of the historic cottage at 239 Fourth Street, as concerns grow over the deteriorating condition of the 1888 home.

Organized by Marnie Ford, a community meeting on Saturday, November 7, will bring together people interested in finding a practical way to preserve the heritage property. The cottage is recognized for its heritage value, but its condition and current market price present significant challenges to saving it.

The meeting aims to turn community concern into possible solutions. Participants will have an opportunity to share knowledge and ideas, explore potential preservation and ownership models, discuss fundraising and community support, and identify practical next steps.

Some community members have already expressed interest in contributing expertise, advocacy and financial support. However, no preservation plan has been finalized, and the meeting is intended to explore what options may be viable.

The gathering begins at noon in the auditorium of the New Westminster Public Library at 716 Sixth Avenue. Attendees should ask at the library’s front desk for directions to the auditorium.

Anyone interested in protecting New Westminster’s built heritage, volunteering or exploring ways to help is welcome. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to Marnie Ford at [email protected].

Could community collaboration offer a future for this historic cottage? The meeting is an opportunity for residents to help explore the possibilities.
