A greener, cooler New Westminster is on the way! The City has secured up to $1,051,940 in federal grant funding to expand its urban forest and help neighbourhoods better withstand extreme heat.

The funding comes from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative and will support the planting of 1,050 trees during Phase 2 of New Westminster’s Urban Biodiversity Enhancement Initiative (URBEI).

The City’s broader Phase 2 plan aims to plant 6,000 new street and boulevard trees by 2030, alongside improvements to paved areas and other planting conditions to help trees thrive over the long term.

Planting locations will be selected strategically, with priority given to neighbourhoods that have less tree cover and greater vulnerability to extreme heat. The City considers factors including residential density, the number of seniors in an area, existing tree canopy and historical heat-related emergency calls.

The project builds on Phase 1, which saw 2,300 trees planted across 40 parks and public open spaces. This next phase shifts more attention toward streets and boulevards, bringing shade and greenery closer to where residents live and travel.

The funding is part of a national initiative supporting the planting of at least 1.2 million trees across Canada by March 2031.

With more trees planned for local streets, New Westminster is taking another step toward cooler neighbourhoods, stronger biodiversity and a healthier urban environment.

An early-morning traffic stop on the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge has led to impaired driving allegations and a suspected drug trafficking investigation in New Westminster.

According to the New Westminster Police Department, officers spotted a vehicle travelling northbound across the bridge at approximately 5 a.m. on October 24, 2026. The vehicle was reportedly swerving repeatedly and nearly struck a concrete median, prompting officers to pull it over.

Police identified the driver and determined that the individual was already subject to a driving prohibition. The driver also failed a roadside alcohol screening test.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered suspected drugs believed to be consistent with drug trafficking, along with more than $1,800 in Canadian currency.

Samples of the suspected substances have been submitted to Health Canada for analysis and identification.

The driver was served with the driving prohibition, issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition and released with conditions while the drug trafficking investigation continues.

The NWPD says proactive traffic enforcement remains an important part of its efforts to identify dangerous driving, investigate suspected criminal activity and improve public safety.

The investigation is ongoing, and the substances have not yet been confirmed through laboratory analysis.
