Your next coffee, lunch or shopping trip could eventually come with a very different-looking $20 bill.

Canada has unveiled a new vertical $20 polymer bank note, and while New Westminster won't see it in wallets and cash registers right away, the new bill is expected to begin circulating gradually in late February 2027. Until then, the familiar $20 featuring Queen Elizabeth II remains in circulation and continues to be valid.

The new note features King Charles III on the front, along with botanical imagery representing Canada's natural heritage and the floral emblems of all 13 provinces and territories. A transparent window incorporates four plants significant to Indigenous Peoples: wild strawberries, western red cedar, braided sweetgrass and Arctic cotton.

Flip it over and you'll find a familiar Canadian landmark: the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, accompanied by poppies representing remembrance.

And there’s some serious technology packed into that plastic. The new $20 features advanced security elements designed to make the note easier to authenticate and harder to counterfeit. The Bank of Canada says the note is also designed with accessibility in mind.

So, New West, don't retire your current $20 just yet. But sometime next year, that familiar green bill in your wallet is getting a very noticeable makeover.

Fire crews responded to a house fire in New Westminster Sunday afternoon, with heavy smoke and flames reported at a home near Fifth Street and Third Avenue.

New Westminster Fire Rescue Services was called to the property shortly after 5:30 p.m. on September 6. When crews arrived, they found significant smoke and flames coming from the house.

Initial information indicated that everyone had made it outside before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials also received reports of a tree burning in the backyard as crews worked at the scene.

The fire was reported by CityNews on September 7, with photographs from 1stDue Media showing firefighters responding to the incident.

Further details about the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage were not provided in the available report.
