Discover Local History at the Samson V Museum

All aboard! The historic Samson V is officially open for the season, welcoming visitors back to New Westminster’s waterfront for another summer of local history and exploration.

Operated by the New Westminster Museum & Archives, the beloved wooden sternwheeler will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., offering guests the chance to step aboard one of the city’s most iconic heritage attractions.

Known as the last remaining steam-powered sternwheeler in Canada, Samson V played an important role in the province’s maritime and logging history. Today, the floating museum gives visitors a unique glimpse into British Columbia’s industrial past through preserved equipment, exhibits, and interactive experiences along the Fraser River.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a family looking for a weekend outing, or simply curious about New Westminster’s waterfront heritage, the seasonal reopening marks the perfect opportunity to rediscover a local landmark.

Big upgrades are on the horizon for parks and recreation spaces across New Westminster. The City is sharing new highlights from its People, Parks, and Play Master Plan, a 10-year vision focused on improving community spaces, expanding amenities, and creating more opportunities for recreation and connection.

Among the planned projects, Glenbrook Ravine Park is undergoing ecological restoration with native trees and plants replacing invasive species, while sport courts at Westburnco, Simcoe, Grimston, and Moody parks will be transformed into modern multi-sport courts.

The City also plans to convert the Hume Park lacrosse box into a covered all-weather multi-sport facility and expand Westminster Pier Park westward to create additional riverfront space for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Families can also look forward to renewed spray parks at Ryall Park, Queen’s Park, and Hume Park, along with upgrades to the Habitat building and a future replacement of Queen’s Park Stadium to better support sports and community events.

City officials say the long-term plan is designed to support active living, strengthen community connections, and create welcoming outdoor spaces for all ages.
