E-scooters may be growing in popularity across the region, but in New Westminster, they remain off-limits on public roads and sidewalks.

The City is not part of B.C.’s Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project, meaning riders using e-scooters in public spaces could face fines — and more importantly, safety risks.

According to the New Westminster Police Department, there have already been serious injuries involving young riders, including children as young as 12. These incidents are a key reason why officers are focusing on education and awareness while broader regulations are still being discussed.

Police say they understand the appeal of e-scooters as a convenient and environmentally friendly option, and are working with the City to advocate for clear, province-wide rules around e-mobility.

In the meantime:

  • Officers may stop riders to provide information

  • Tickets can be issued in some cases

  • Fines for operating an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle can reach up to $598

For now, the message is clear: until regulations change, e-scooters are not permitted in New Westminster, and safety remains the top priority.
