Commuters who travel between New Westminster and Surrey will need to plan ahead this February, as the Pattullo Bridge and the new stal̕əw̓asəm (Riverview) Bridge will both be fully closed to traffic for approximately one week.
Fraser Crossing Partners has confirmed that the complete closure will begin Friday, February 6 at 8:00 p.m., allowing crews to connect roadways on both the Surrey and New Westminster sides of the new bridge. During this time, no vehicles will be able to cross the Fraser River at this location, and drivers should expect increased traffic on alternate routes such as the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges.
Signage will be in place, and motorists are encouraged to monitor DriveBC for real-time updates and detour information.
Once the work is complete, both bridges will reopen with four lanes of traffic split between them. All four lanes on the new stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge — including the Royal Avenue on-ramp in New Westminster — are expected to open later in February. Demolition of the original Pattullo Bridge will then begin and is expected to take up to two years.
The Queensborough Bridge is set to receive a significant renewal starting in spring 2026, aimed at enhancing its safety, functionality, and lifespan. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has confirmed a $20.8-million contract has been awarded to Kingston Construction Ltd. to carry out the extensive work.
The project will involve resurfacing the bridge, repairing its structural components, replacing aging deck joints, and upgrading the drainage systems to modern standards. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
Built in 1960, the Queensborough Bridge spans the north arm of the Fraser River, linking New Westminster and Lulu Island via Highway 91A. The four-lane bridge—two lanes in each direction—has already seen several upgrades over the decades, including seismic strengthening, the installation of median barriers, and the addition of pedestrian safety walls.
Carrying close to 88,000 vehicles daily, the bridge is a vital transportation link. Its renewal has been prioritized as part of the Ministry’s broader infrastructure maintenance and asset management strategy.
To ensure worker and driver safety during the project, nighttime lane closures will be implemented in both directions between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weekdays, and until 8 a.m. on weekends. During these hours, one lane will remain open in each direction to maintain traffic flow, though drivers can expect some congestion at the start of the evening commute.
