Enjoy Burgers, Drinks & Community Fun

Get ready for a night of burgers, drinks, trivia, and community fun! The Hyack Festival Association is bringing the good vibes to downtown New Westminster with its upcoming Burger & Beer Fundraiser on Wednesday, June 3 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Kelly O’Bryan’s Restaurant, 800 Columbia Street.

The lively evening promises the perfect mix of great food, friendly competition, and community spirit — all while supporting the free festivals and events that bring New Westminster together throughout the year.

Guests can enjoy their choice of a beef, chicken, or veggie burger, paired with fries, salad, or soup, plus a beer, wine, or highball for $35 plus GST. The event will also feature New West-themed trivia, a silent auction, and plenty of laughs along the way. Tickets will also be available at the door for $40 plus GST.

Whether you’re coming for the food, the trivia bragging rights, or simply a fun night out with friends, organizers say the fundraiser is all about celebrating community while supporting local events.

Frustration is growing among New Westminster businesses as ongoing closures and traffic disruptions tied to the new stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge continue more than three months after the crossing officially opened.

While the bridge connecting New Westminster and Surrey began operating in February, construction work and temporary shutdowns are still affecting traffic flow, deliveries, and customer access throughout the area. Business leaders say the ongoing changes are creating confusion for drivers and added pressure for local shops and restaurants already facing economic challenges.

The Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Association says short-term closures can be especially disruptive because many commuters are unaware of changing traffic patterns until they encounter them. Restaurant owners, in particular, are feeling the impact through reduced customer visits and difficulties coordinating supplier deliveries during closures.

Concerns have also been raised about limited notice surrounding some shutdowns. According to the Downtown New West BIA, businesses were given only a few days’ notice before the latest weekend closure, making it difficult to prepare staff, suppliers, and customers.

Additional closures are still planned as work continues on the project and the future deconstruction of the Pattullo Bridge moves forward over the coming years.

Drivers are encouraged to stay updated on traffic advisories and plan ahead when travelling through the area.
