๐Ÿ’ฒ Seizure of about $11,000 in counterfeit cash

An early-morning incident at a Safeway in New Westminster led to the seizure of approximately $11,000 in counterfeit cash after store staff alerted police to a suspicious bill.

The New Westminster Police Department said the situation unfolded around 7 a.m. on March 12 when a cashier became concerned about the authenticity of a $100 banknote. The employee worked with an on-site security guard to compare the bill with a legitimate one, confirming their suspicions before contacting police.

Officers arrived at the store and arrested a man at the scene. During the investigation, police seized roughly $11,000 in counterfeit currency along with a quantity of drugs. The fake money consisted of both $100 and $50 bills.

Police described the amount of counterfeit currency involved as unusual and credited the alertness of store staff for helping bring the situation to light before the suspect left the store.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing as they attempt to determine where the counterfeit bills originated. Potential charges being considered include fraud under $5,000 and possession of counterfeit currency.

The incident comes as law enforcement agencies across the region report an increase in counterfeit money circulating in communities.

Police are encouraging businesses and the public to check bills carefully for signs of fraud, including the raised holographic strip and other security features found on legitimate Canadian banknotes.
