A longtime New Westminster cannabis retailer is one step closer to relocating from Queensborough to downtown after receiving support from city council.
At its June 8 meeting, council voted 6-1 in favour of a zoning amendment that would allow the cannabis store currently operating at 540 Ewen Avenue to move to The Shops at New West near the SkyTrain station.
The business owner cited increased competition and changing market conditions in Queensborough, including the opening of a government-operated cannabis store, as factors affecting the store's long-term viability. The proposed downtown location offers greater visibility, increased foot traffic, and direct access to transit.
The decision sparked debate among council members. Supporters argued the move could help activate the downtown core, support local business investment, and attract customers to the area. Opponents questioned whether a cannabis retailer aligns with broader downtown revitalization goals.
The relocation still requires final approvals from both the City and Province before the business can open at its new location.
What if an invasive plant could become something beautiful? That's exactly what participants will discover at the upcoming Ivy Weaving Workshop at the Fraser River Discovery Centre on July 18.
Led by environmental educator and basket-weaving instructor Grace Nombrado, the hands-on workshop teaches participants how to identify, collect, prepare, and weave invasive English ivy into functional handmade baskets. Along the way, attendees will learn about local ecosystems, environmental stewardship, and the impact invasive species can have on native habitats.
No previous weaving experience is required, making the workshop accessible for beginners looking to try something creative while connecting with nature. All materials are provided, and participants will leave with their own completed ivy basket to take home.
Beyond learning a new skill, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to see how environmental challenges can be transformed into creative solutions.
The workshop runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to participants 16 years and older.
