Give Gently Used Items a Second Life in New West

Cleaning out your closet can do more than make a little extra space—it can help support neighbours and community programs right here in New Westminster. The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society is encouraging residents to give gently used clothing and textiles a second life through its community donation bins.

Donated items help support a range of local initiatives, including immediate assistance for residents displaced by fires, weekly grocery distribution and educational opportunities through NWSS bursaries. Donations also help fund causes such as the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund, prostate cancer support, the Terry Fox Foundation and local community events like the River Walk.

Residents can donate gently used clothing, shoes, jackets, linens and small textiles at two convenient locations: Hall 2 at 820 13th Street or Hall 3 at 1011 Ewen Avenue.

Before dropping anything off, make sure items are gently used and suitable for donation. The society asks residents to keep garbage and household waste out of the bins, helping ensure every donated item can make a meaningful difference.

A simple closet cleanout can become a small act of kindness that stays right here in the community. ❤️

Got a sweet tooth? Today might be the perfect day to follow it.

WhataFood is bringing back its Cake Festival Pop-Up for a second edition, turning Saturday afternoon into a celebration of Brazilian cakes, pastries and street food right here in New Westminster.

The pop-up runs today, Saturday, October 3, from 12 PM to 5 PM at WhataFood, 800 Carnarvon St #255. This time around, Gimme Bakery and Brazilian Party Food Vancouver are joining the fun, serving up freshly made Brazilian cakes for the afternoon.

And because one can never survive on cake alone — or so we're told — WhataFood's pastéis and salgados will also be available throughout the event. So you can grab something savoury, try a Brazilian cake, and then conveniently find another reason to have dessert.

Located inside the New Westminster Station area, WhataFood is already a local stop for Brazilian street food, making today's pop-up an easy addition to a downtown food adventure.

Whether you're already a fan of Brazilian flavours or simply curious about what’s waiting behind that cake counter, today is the day to find out.
