Your old Halloween costume might be someone else’s perfect look.
Before you spend money on a brand-new costume this Halloween, take a peek inside that overflowing costume bin. The New West Farmers Market is giving gently used costumes another chance to shine with its Halloween Costume Swap at Tipperary Park.
From October 15 to 29, market-goers can stop by the info booth between 3 PM and 7 PM to drop off a clean, gently used costume — or simply browse the collection and find a new-to-you costume to take home. And yes, you can take one even if you don’t have a costume to donate.
That means last year’s witch, wizard, superhero, dinosaur or mysteriously expensive costume that was worn exactly once could get a whole new Halloween adventure. It’s also a fun way to save money, keep perfectly good costumes out of the landfill, and embrace a more waste-free, circular approach to Halloween.
The swap runs alongside the New West Farmers Market’s regular Thursday market at Tipperary Park, where you can also shop local produce, prepared foods, crafts and more. The 2026 market season runs through October 29.

So, New West, check that costume closet. One person's old costume could be another person's Halloween masterpiece.
New Westminster Police are investigating a residential arson in the 800 block of York Street and are looking into a possible connection to a break and enter reported at the same home just one day earlier.
Police were called by New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services at approximately 3:45 a.m. on October 5, after firefighters responded to a residential fire. Officers had attended the same property the previous day as part of a break and enter investigation.
The investigation is still in its early stages, but police believe both incidents were targeted and are working to determine whether—and how—the two events are connected. The residents were not home when the fire occurred, and no injuries were reported, although the home sustained significant damage.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses. Police say there is currently no indication of an ongoing risk to the public.
Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
