🚁 Eyes in the Sky: NWPD to Begin Using Drones

The New Westminster Police Department is preparing to add a new tool to its public safety toolkit: drones.

According to NWPD, certified officers trained and approved by Transport Canada will begin operating drones when they can meaningfully support investigations and police operations. The technology will be used selectively, not routinely, and only in situations where it can improve safety, efficiency, or outcomes.

Police say drones can be especially helpful during missing person searches, serious collision investigations, crime scene documentation, and assessments of unsafe or insecure buildings. Having a real-time aerial view can provide critical information in fast-moving situations where every second matters.

Several police departments across British Columbia already use drones regularly, and NWPD says the program aligns with proven practices elsewhere in the province.

Importantly, the department emphasized that privacy protections remain in place. Drone use will be tied to specific incidents, all flights will be recorded, and operations will comply with provincial privacy laws.
