TransLink is rolling out a major upgrade to the Expo Line by replacing all 21 original elevators—many of which have been in service since the SkyTrain launched in 1985. The improvements are designed to boost accessibility, reliability, and comfort for riders across the network, including key stations in New Westminster.

The $32 million Expo Line Elevator Replacement Program is already underway, with work happening now at Nanaimo and 22nd Street stations. Each new elevator will offer more space for wheelchairs, strollers, bikes, and luggage—making travel easier for everyone. They’re also designed to be more reliable and better equipped to handle extreme weather, keeping the SkyTrain system moving no matter the season.

New Westminster riders stand to benefit significantly, with modernized infrastructure supporting smoother, more accessible travel at one of the region’s busiest transit hubs. The work will be done in phases to minimize disruptions, with only a few elevators out of service at any time.

This project builds on the recent replacement of 37 Expo Line escalators and is part of a wider vision to modernize Metro Vancouver’s transit system.
