With summer temperatures on the rise, water usage in New Westminster can spike by up to 50%, much of it due to lawn watering. In response, the City is encouraging residents to adopt water-wise habits by celebrating golden lawns through the Golden Lawn Photo Contest, open until October 15, 2025.
While a vibrant green lawn may seem ideal, grass naturally enters a dormant phase during hot, dry months. Surprisingly, keeping grass dormant only requires about 15 minutes of watering once per week. Unless the region faces prolonged drought and intense heat, lawns will bounce back with the return of rainfall.
Residents are reminded that watering during the heat of the day is ineffective, as evaporation from the sun and wind reduces the impact, wasting water and money. Instead, watering should be done between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., following local regulations, to minimize water loss.
The City invites homeowners and renters in single-family homes across New Westminster to submit photos of their golden, dormant lawns. The contest is open to participants aged 13 and up who are legal residents of British Columbia. City employees and their households are not eligible.
To enter, residents must email a photo of their lawn to [email protected], along with their property address, phone number, and email by 11:59 p.m. on October 15. Only one entry per property is allowed, and photos must be original and taken by the participant. For privacy, it’s advised to avoid including people, especially identifiable faces, in submissions.
Three winners will be chosen through a random draw and notified within two weeks after the contest closes. Each will receive a $100 gift card for a local New Westminster business of their choice or for New Westminster Parks and Recreation. Winning entries may be shared through official City communications.
By letting lawns go golden, residents can help conserve water while still maintaining healthy turf—and maybe even earn a prize in the process.
