🧵 Fabric of Unity: Local Art Project Responds to Rising Racial Tensions 🪡

A new community art initiative, the Solidarity Quilt Project, is launching in the Lower Mainland with a mission to stand in solidarity with BIPOC communities amid growing concerns over anti-immigration sentiment and racial tensions in Canada and the United States.

The project seeks to channel collective grief, resilience, and hope into a collaborative textile artwork. At its heart is a monthly gathering—a sewing circle—designed as a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds and skill levels to come together, share stories, learn, and connect through stitching.

The first sewing circle is scheduled for the last Sunday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m., with meetings planned to continue monthly until the quilt is completed. Participants can expect to find basic materials and guidance provided, many sourced from local clothing swaps.

Organizers envision the quilt as a living tapestry that weaves together the diverse experiences, cultures, and resistances of those involved, creating not just a piece of art but a symbol of unity and healing.

Those interested are encouraged to follow the project for updates as it evolves, with each session contributing to a meaningful and ever-growing statement of solidarity.

New Westminster’s Cultural Crawl returns this weekend, bringing two full days of art, workshops, performances, and community connections across the city. From hands-on creative labs to live music and poetry, there’s something for everyone to discover.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening:

Saturday, October 4

  • Creative workshops: medicine bag making, oil pastel scratch art, art with Serhii Kolodka, and children’s activities.

  • Open studios & labs at the New Media Gallery.

  • Guided museum tours, smartphone photography, and poetry collage.

  • Evening highlights: Poetry Floodlight at Arrieta Art Studio, Mushtari Begum Festival at Massey Theatre, and PechaKucha New West at Inn at the Quay.

  • Plus: Ukrainian lunch at The Boardwalk (also Sunday).

Sunday, October 5

  • Poetry collage and Ukrainian lunch continue.

  • Mixed media still life for families, creative in-camera techniques, and another open art lab.

  • “Ode to the Pattullo Bridge” poetry reading salon at the Anvil Centre.

Whether you’re looking to create, watch, or be inspired, the Cultural Crawl is the perfect way to celebrate local talent.

⛈️ Rain Joke of the Day 🌧️

🌧️ Why did the rain become a photographer? 📸

It wanted to capture all the “wet” moments! 💦🖼️
