New Westminster police are warning residents about fraudulent QR codes that have been placed on parking meters throughout the city, after several people reported financial losses linked to the stickers.
The New Westminster Police Department says victims scanned QR codes marked as a way to pay for parking and were directed to websites that appeared legitimate. After entering their credit card information, some later discovered unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts.
In one reported case, a victim lost $2,000.
Police are investigating where the fraudulent stickers came from and have already removed several from parking meters across New Westminster.
What drivers should know
The City of New Westminster does not use QR codes as a payment method for parking. Drivers should rely on the payment options and instructions displayed directly on the parking meter or nearby official signage.
Police are asking anyone who has used one of the suspicious QR codes within the past five days to:
Check your bank and credit card accounts for unauthorized transactions.
Contact your financial institution immediately if you notice suspicious activity.
Report the incident to New Westminster Police.
Avoid scanning QR codes placed over or attached to parking meters, even if they appear official.
Use only the payment methods listed on the meter or official City signage.
The warning comes as police investigate who placed the stickers and how widely they have been distributed.
Residents are also being encouraged to share the warning with friends, family members and others who regularly park in New Westminster.
