A heated Mann Cup matchup in New Westminster spilled over from the floor to the stands Monday night, as a fight between fans left one man injured and police investigating.
The incident took place at Queenβs Park Arena during Game 3 of the national championship series between the New Westminster Salmonbellies and the Six Nations Chiefs. Police say a man was struck in the head with a bullhorn during the brawl, requiring stitches.
No arrests have been made, but investigators are reviewing arena security footage and encouraging the public to share any videos of the altercation. Authorities say fans can expect an increased police presence at future games.
The Western Lacrosse Association and the Mann Cup Organizing Committee condemned the violence, saying the championship is meant to highlight Canadaβs best lacrosse talent, not serve as a venue for disorderly conduct.
To prevent further incidents, new measures will be introduced, including bag checks, a ban on air horns and other noisemakers (except traditional drums), and an earlier cutoff for alcohol sales. Anyone identified as taking part in Mondayβs fight will be barred from attending the remaining games.
Officials stressed the importance of keeping the tournament safe and family-friendly.
