Stewardson Way has now reopened in both directions after a fatal collision closed the roadway for several hours Sunday morning. The crash occurred near 5th Avenue, prompting a significant emergency response and traffic disruption.

According to the Provincial Health Services Authority, emergency crews were called to the scene around 7:30 a.m. Responding units included four ambulances—two staffed with primary care paramedics, two with advanced care paramedics—and a paramedic supervisor.

One person was transported to hospital in stable condition. Authorities have confirmed at least one fatality, though the number of vehicles involved remains unclear.

The New Westminster Police Department is in the early stages of the investigation. The BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service have both been notified and are assisting.

Police are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant dash-cam footage is asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.

Commuters in New Westminster’s Uptown neighbourhood should prepare for traffic changes beginning Monday, July 14. Sixth Street, between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, will be reduced to one-way traffic to accommodate construction on the east side of the street.

The change will remain in effect 24 hours a day through Tuesday, August 5. Drivers should expect delays and consider alternate routes if possible.

Transit users will also be affected, as at least one bus stop in the area will be temporarily relocated during the construction period.

Motorists and transit riders are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. The City thanks residents for their patience during this disruption.
