In response to increasingly hot and dry weather conditions, a city-wide fire and smoking ban has been put into effect in all New Westminster parks, natural areas, and the Glenbrook Ravine as of July 17. Issued by the Fire Chief, this temporary measure is designed to reduce the risk of wildfires during peak summer heat.

The ban prohibits smoking, open flames, and the use of any charcoal or wood-burning barbecues. Items such as candles, tiki torches, and chafing fuels are also not allowed. However, residents may still use propane barbecues, grills, and other approved cooking devices in designated areas.

While smoking and vaping are already restricted in many public areas year-round under the city’s Smoking Control Bylaw, this extended ban applies specifically to parks and green spaces, where dry vegetation can pose a serious fire hazard.

Residents are urged to stay alert, report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 9-1-1 immediately, and follow all safety measures in place. New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services will continue to monitor local conditions alongside other City departments.

Start your morning with purpose at the next Waves Wednesday, happening Wednesday, August 6, from 7:30 to 9:00 AM at Waves Coffee House (715 Columbia St.) in the heart of Downtown New West.

Presented in partnership with the Downtown New West BIA, this popular breakfast series offers free drip coffee and meaningful conversation with local and national changemakers. August’s featured guest is MP Jake Sawatzky, one of Canada’s youngest Members of Parliament and a passionate advocate for mental health and youth empowerment.

Attendees will hear Jake’s storyβ€”from neuroscience student and volunteer organizer to a bold voice in Ottawa serving on the Finance and Health Committees. With topics like housing affordability, mental health, and youth engagement front and center, this conversation promises to be both timely and impactful.

Whether you’re a student, entrepreneur, or community leader, this is a great opportunity to connect, ask questions, and be inspired.

🎟 Free for Chamber, BIA & Burnaby Board of Trade members. $10 for non-members.
