New Westminster police are investigating several recent fires across the city, with particular attention on a series of incidents in Queensborough that investigators say may warrant closer scrutiny.
The latest investigation centres on a suspicious fire at an abandoned house in the 300 block of Boyne Street. New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services responded around 8 a.m. on October 13 and extinguished the blaze. Police, fire investigators and forensic identification specialists are continuing to investigate, although the exact cause has not yet been determined.
The incident follows an October 11 fire at a downtown apartment building, where police assisted firefighters with road closures and crowd management. That fire was determined not to be suspicious.
Investigators are also examining other fire-related incidents in Queensborough over recent months, including locations along Ewen Avenue, Boyne Street and Boyd Street, as well as nearby industrial and commercial properties. A suspect was arrested in connection with a September 28 fire involving a garbage container near the 900 block of Ewen Avenue and was later released with conditions.
Police have not established that all the incidents are connected, but they are examining the geographic concentration as part of their ongoing investigations.
Residents, workers and business owners in Queensborough are being urged to report suspicious activity around dumpsters, garbage containers, vacant buildings and construction sites. Police also encourage anyone with relevant surveillance or dash camera footage to come forward.
Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity near Boyne Street on October 13 or has video that could assist investigators is asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
New Westminster artists and makers are being invited to bring their creativity to the spotlight as Arts New West opens submissions for its fifth annual Winter Solstice Community Exhibition at The Gallery at Queen’s Park this December.
Inspired by the longest night of the year and the gradual return of light, the exhibition encourages artists to explore themes of winter, light and darkness, nature, seasonal traditions and transformation. Artists can submit one new or existing artwork, with all artistic mediums welcome.
This year brings an exciting addition: a special handcrafted ornament collection featuring work by local artists and artisans. The collection will also serve as a fundraiser for Arts New West, with all proceeds from ornament sales supporting the organization’s programming and community events.
Artists can submit artwork, ornaments or both, offering multiple ways to contribute to a seasonal celebration of creativity and community.
The exhibition provides an opportunity for New Westminster’s creative community to share its work with the public while helping support local arts initiatives.
The submission deadline is November 27, 2026. Interested artists and makers can apply through the online submission form or contact Arts New West at [email protected] with questions.
Whether you're an established artist or a maker with a handcrafted creation to share, this is a chance to help bring the spirit of winter to life in the Royal City.
