A man was arrested without incident after reports of a person with a firearm in New Westminster.

On March 6, police responded to a 9-1-1 call about a man reportedly carrying a firearm in the 1200 block of Sixth Avenue. As officers arrived, a police-operated drone was deployed to assist with locating the suspect.

Using real-time aerial footage, the drone operator quickly identified a person matching the description and relayed that information to officers on the ground. The suspect was located and taken into custody shortly after.

Police say the use of drone technology helped officers assess the situation more safely and efficiently. The New Westminster Police Department only recently introduced drones into operations in early February 2026.

Charges related to firearms are being considered, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Residents are reminded to report suspicious activity to police. In emergencies or if a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1.

A new inclusive recreation program is coming to New Westminster, offering participants the chance to explore wheelchair sports in a fun and supportive environment.

The City of New Westminster Parks and Recreation has introduced Wheelchair Multisport, designed for both wheelchair users and able-bodied participants. The program focuses on building movement skills, confidence, teamwork, and physical literacy through a variety of sports.

Participants will have access to sport wheelchairs, though those who already use a wheelchair are welcome to bring their own.

Two program streams are available:

👨 Adults

  • Mondays, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

  • April 14 – May 11

  • May 25 – June 22

🧒 Ages 8–12

  • Tuesdays, 5:00 – 5:45 p.m.

  • April 7 – May 5

  • May 12 – June 9

The program offers a welcoming space to try something new, stay active, and connect with others in the community.
