A fast police response prevented a senior from losing thousands of dollars in a fraud scam on October 24, 2025, in New Westminster. Officers were called to the 1900 block of Edinburgh Street around 1:30 p.m. after a man in his seventies was tricked into believing his daughter had been in a car accident and needed $6,735 for legal help.

After handing over the cash to a stranger, the victim realized the situation might be fraudulent and called police. While officers were on scene, the scammers called again—this time demanding another $8,000.

Police set up surveillance and, around 4:00 p.m., arrested a suspect matching the victim’s description. The stolen money was recovered and returned, and investigators believe the man may be linked to other frauds across the Lower Mainland.

Residents are urged to be cautious of urgent or emotional phone calls requesting money and to verify such claims with family before taking action.

This Remembrance Day, take a thoughtful journey through New Westminster’s history with the WWI Veterans Walking Tour, running Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM in the Queen’s Park neighbourhood.

Presented by Heritage New West with support from the New Westminster Museum and Archives, this free self-guided tour highlights the family homes of 19 local veterans who served in the First World War.

Interpretive posters—created by the Heritage Preservation Society and researched by local historian Jim Wolf—will be displayed outside each home, sharing the personal stories of bravery, sacrifice, and community spirit. Participants can walk at their own pace and reflect on the city’s proud heritage.
