New Westminster storyboard artist Shaan Ali Khan sees New West Comic Fest as more than a place to sell art. For him, it is a chance for local creators to meet the public, connect with one another and show just how much creative work is being produced in the community.
Khan, who lives near the downtown waterfront, has worked in storyboarding for about 15 years. His interest in animation began early, growing up with shows such as Batman: The Animated Series, X-Men comics and films including Star Wars. Those influences eventually led him toward visual storytelling as a career.
Storyboard artists help shape animated productions at an early stage, planning shots, framing and character movement before projects move further into production. Khan has worked on projects including Pantheon and Scavengers Reign, which he considers highlights of his career.
He has also seen major changes in the animation industry. Streaming companies invested heavily in animated projects during the pandemic, but that spending has since slowed, making it more difficult for studios and artists to secure support for new work.
Khan believes that uncertainty is also encouraging artists to create independently and find new ways to reach audiences.
That is part of what makes events such as New West Comic Fest valuable.
Khan typically brings prints inspired by pop culture, including video games and animation, but he is especially interested in seeing creators promote original characters, comics and stories.
For emerging artists, conventions also provide immediate feedback. Creators can see what catches visitors’ attention, learn which pieces generate interest and make connections with other artists and potential supporters.
Khan said those connections can sometimes be surprisingly local, with artists and visitors discovering they live only a few blocks apart or have worked with some of the same people.
For first-time Comic Fest visitors, his advice is to arrive with an open mind, explore unfamiliar work and take a chance on something they have never seen before.
New Westminster gardeners can give their homegrown seeds a fresh start at an upcoming hands-on seed cleaning event hosted by the New Westminster Public Library.
The session will help gardeners prepare seeds harvested over the summer for storage or donation to the library’s seed library. Participants will learn and take part in traditional seed-cleaning methods, including threshing, winnowing, screening and sorting.
Gardeners are encouraged to bring their own harvested seed material to clean together. Those with extra seeds, large quantities of bulky seeds or divided bulbs can also bring them to share with others.
Participants should bring small bags or envelopes for taking new seeds home, along with any seeds or bulbs they would like to contribute.
The event will be held outdoors in the Main Branch parking lot, weather permitting. If heavy rain makes outdoor activities impractical, the session will move indoors to the Auditorium, although some messy seed-cleaning activities may not be possible inside.
