🍂 What Are You Thankful For, New West? 🫶

Turkey? Check. Pumpkin pie? Hopefully. A little gratitude? Definitely.

It’s Thanksgiving Monday, New West, and while today may be about good food, full tables and time with family and friends, it’s also a good excuse to pause and appreciate the things that make this city feel like home.

Maybe you’re thankful for a neighbour who always says hello, the local café that knows your order, a favourite walk along the Quay, or those beautiful Queen’s Park moments. Maybe it’s the small businesses, artists, volunteers, community groups and everyday people who keep making New West a little more colourful, connected and interesting.

And around here, we have plenty to be grateful for.

But New West Spotlight has a few things at the top of our list.

First and foremost: YOU.

This is Issue #747 of New West Spotlight, and every issue exists because there are people like you who open it, read it, share it, click on a story, tell a friend about an event, or simply spend a few minutes catching up on what's happening around town.

We’re thankful that you’ve allowed us to be part of your inbox — and part of your New West routine.

We’re thankful for the local businesses, organizations, artists, event organizers and community members who give us so many stories to tell.

And most of all, we’re thankful for this community that keeps giving us reasons to hit “publish” again and again.

So today, we’re turning the question around:

❤️ What Are YOU Thankful For, New West?

Maybe it’s a person. A place. A tradition. A favourite local business. Or something wonderfully ordinary, like a really good cup of coffee on a rainy morning.

Whatever it is, take a moment today to appreciate it.

And from all of us at New West Spotlight — thank you for being here.

Happy Thanksgiving, New West. 🦃🍂

New Westminster’s two mayoral candidates agree Metro Vancouver needs greater accountability, but Daniel Fontaine and Patrick Johnstone have sharply different ideas about regional governance and services.

Fontaine, the New Westminster Progressives candidate, has been a vocal critic of Metro Vancouver and supports a five-point Metro Vancouver Accountability Charter. The proposal calls for limiting regional politicians’ additional compensation, an independent review of the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant, a smaller directly elected Mayors Council overseeing Metro Vancouver, TransLink and E-Comm 911, an Auditor General for Local Government and a review of regional programs to focus on core services.

Fontaine argues Metro Vancouver should concentrate on water, sewer and wastewater infrastructure, while reconsidering its role in areas including housing, regional parks and economic development.

Incumbent Mayor Patrick Johnstone, the Community First New Westminster candidate, agrees Metro Vancouver faces trust and accountability challenges but opposes defunding regional services. He points to Metro Vancouver Housing, which provides about 3,400 affordable rental homes to more than 10,000 residents, as well as regional parks, as important services.

The candidates also differ on governance. Fontaine supports the elected Mayors Council proposal, while Johnstone favours improving the existing system through greater transparency and efficiency.

They also differ over New Westminster’s regional board representation. Fontaine says he would seek council’s support to serve if elected, while Johnstone says the decision should be made by council as a whole.
