As the year comes to a close and the city settles into those quiet, glowing final hours, we just want to pause and say thank you.

This past year reminded us why New Westminster is so special. We saw neighbours supporting neighbours, local businesses taking brave new steps, artists and organizers sharing their gifts, and the community coming together in ways that felt genuine and meaningful.

At New West Spotlight, our goal has always been simple: to share the stories that make this city feel like home. And this year, you helped bring those stories to life.

Every message, every shared post, every event tip and kind word meant more than you know. Together, we celebrated the small moments and the big wins, and helped keep New West connected.

Thank you for trusting us with your stories.

As we step into a new year, we’re grateful to continue shining a light on the people and places that make New Westminster what it is.

Residents are invited to welcome the New Year with a beloved francophone tradition at Galette des Rois, hosted by Le Relais Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at 627 Columbia Street in New Westminster.

This festive and family-friendly gathering celebrates the traditional Galette des Rois, a delicious frangipane-filled cake enjoyed across francophone cultures to mark the start of the year. One lucky guest will even discover the hidden fève and be crowned King or Queen for the day, adding a playful and joyful touch to the celebration.

Beyond the cake, the afternoon will feature a creative workshop led by Hélène Morizur, where participants of all ages can express their hopes and inspirations for the year ahead. Through cutting, drawing, writing, and collage, attendees will create their own inspiration boards in a relaxed and artistic setting.

The event is free and open to everyone, offering a wonderful opportunity to connect, create, and celebrate together in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
