The City of New Westminster is proud to be officially designated a HEART and HEARTH community, joining a growing provincial effort to ensure people experiencing homelessness have access to safety, dignity, and meaningful support.

HEART (Homeless Encampment Action Response Teams) and HEARTH (Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing) are part of the Province’s Belonging in B.C. plan, which focuses on bringing people indoors, strengthening supports, and building healthier, more compassionate communities.

With funding through these programs, New Westminster’s Purpose Shelter at 502 Columbia Street will now operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Previously open for 12 hours daily, the shelter’s expanded hours mean greater stability and care for its 50 guests.

This important change allows for:

  • More personalized, one-on-one support for shelter guests

  • Consistent access to case planning, navigation, and referral services

  • Three nutritious meals a day, along with ongoing access to washrooms and showers

  • Reduced impacts of homelessness for both shelter guests and the broader community

This designation reflects a shared commitment—from the Province, the City, and community partners—to respond with compassion, collaboration, and care.

The Vagabond Players are back on stage with their next production, Moon Over Buffalo, a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy by acclaimed playwright Ken Ludwig. Directed by Miles Lavkulich, this madcap farce delivers classic theatrical chaos, sharp wit, and larger-than-life characters that will keep audiences laughing from curtain up to curtain call.

Set backstage during a disastrous touring production, Moon Over Buffalo follows a pair of fading stage stars, their feuding castmates, tangled romances, and a whole lot of mistaken identities. Doors slam, egos clash, and nothing goes quite according to plan—making this beloved comedy a perfect escape for theatre lovers and first-time audiences alike.

Known for championing community theatre in New Westminster, Vagabond Players once again bring heart, humour, and high-energy storytelling to the stage. If you’re looking for a fun night out filled with big laughs and classic farce, this one is not to be missed.
