The holiday season is shining a little brighter in New Westminster as the Lower Mainland Purpose Society kicks off its 34th Annual Christmas Hamper Programโ€”a long-standing community initiative dedicated to spreading joy, compassion, and support to families and individuals in need.

Each year, Purpose Society mobilizes donors, volunteers, and neighbourhood champions to โ€œAdopt a Family,โ€ donate gifts, or help deliver hampers door-to-door. These hampers bring holiday cheer to households experiencing financial challenges and ensure that everyoneโ€”especially childrenโ€”gets to feel the warmth of the season. In past years, the program has supported more than 110 families across New Westminster, Burnaby, and the Tri-Cities, along with 100 single adults who receive specially prepared Christmas gift bags.

The 2025 program runs from September 26 to December 15, with Hamper Day set for December 18, when volunteers come together to distribute the gifts. This year, Purpose is once again calling on the community to donate food items, gift items, and support for the 100 single adults who will receive Christmas gift bags.

Residents wishing to take part in this meaningful Random Act of Kindness may contact Pam Bloom at [email protected] or reach out to Ashley at 604-526-2522 for details on how to participate.

This season, New Westminster is invited to share the spirit of givingโ€”and help ensure every family experiences the joy that Christmas brings.

Get ready to shine, Sapperton! โœจ
On Sunday, December 7, the neighbourhood lights up once again for the second annual Light Up Sapperton โ€” a joyful, family-friendly celebration presented by the Sapperton Business Collective and the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.

From 12pm to 6pm, East Columbia Street transforms into a festive corridor filled with holiday cheer. Families can meet adorable holiday characters (perfect for photos!), enjoy live performances, explore local shops, and take part in activities designed to bring the community together in the coziest way.

Start your adventure at Sapperton Plaza (411 E Columbia St), where you can pick up your event program and dive straight into the fun. Whether you're stopping by for the entertainment, browsing the local businesses, or simply soaking in the glow of the holiday lights, this free event is the perfect way to kick off the season.

Wrap up warm, bring your loved ones, and join the neighbourhood in lighting up Sapperton with joy, connection, and community spirit. ๐ŸŽ„โœจ
