Arundel Mansion is giving New Westminster residents a rather unusual reason to consider an overnight stay this weekend.

On Saturday, September 19, a travelling buying event will set up at Arundel Mansion, 46 Begbie Street, with experts on hand from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM to look at old Canadian and U.S. coins, gold, silver and jewellery.

And for anyone who has a box of old coins, inherited jewellery or a few mystery pieces tucked away, there may be another advantage to staying at the Mansion the night before — you can be first in line Saturday morning.

The buyers say they are interested in Canadian coins dated before 1969, U.S. coins dated before 1965, as well as gold and silver jewellery in a variety of conditions, including broken or damaged pieces.

For Arundel Mansion, hosting the event is also an opportunity to introduce more people to the historic property in downtown New Westminster.

Guests who book a stay for Friday night can turn the visit into a bit of a getaway and be ready when the buying event opens Saturday morning.

It is the kind of event that may send people digging through old jewellery boxes, coin collections and forgotten drawers to see what they have been holding onto.

And even if you are not quite sure whether something has value, the experts will be there to take a look.

Vendors planning to take part in the 2026 New West Farmers Market Holiday Market are being urged to stay alert after reports of fraudulent messages asking applicants for money.

The market is still accepting vendors, but organizers warn that scammers may be posing as representatives or sending unofficial application links.

The New West Farmers Market says vendor applications should only be completed through its official website or Marketspread. Organizers also note that they will only contact vendors through their official social media accounts or email addresses ending in @newwestfarmers.ca.

Anyone who receives a suspicious message or is unsure whether a communication is legitimate should avoid sending money or personal information and contact the market directly at [email protected].

With holiday market preparations underway, the warning is a timely reminder for vendors to double-check who they are dealing with before submitting an application or making any payment.
