Drivers in New Westminster's Sapperton neighbourhood should prepare for a full closure of Keary Street from August 31 to September 21.

The closure will affect Keary Street between the Royal Columbian Hospital parkade entrance and East Columbia Street, allowing a developer to carry out work on a pedestrian bridge.

The hospital parkade will remain accessible via Brunette Avenue, with an additional entrance available from Sherbrooke Street. There will be no through traffic between Brunette Avenue and East Columbia Street at Keary Street.

Southbound traffic on Brunette Avenue will still be able to turn right at East Columbia Street to access Sapperton.

Traffic control personnel and signage will be in place throughout the closure.

New Westminster Police are increasing their presence in the Downtown and Uptown neighbourhoods through a new initiative aimed at preventing crime and improving community safety.

Project Lighthouse builds on enhanced foot patrols introduced in 2025 and 2026 and is funded by $315,000 in provincial C-STEP funding.

The project will include increased foot patrols, traffic enforcement and greater engagement with local business owners. Businesses in designated retail areas will also be invited to take part in efforts targeting shoplifting, including recovering stolen merchandise and identifying those responsible.

Traffic enforcement will support the City's Project Zero Task Force, with police targeting driving behaviours that put other road users at risk.

Residents, businesses and their staff can expect to see increased police activity beginning in early September. Officers will also be available to discuss safety concerns and ways the community can support the initiative.
