New Westminster voters will have a chance to hear directly from the city’s two mayoral candidates during a free public debate focused on the issues shaping the city’s economic future.
The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2026 Mayoral Candidates Debate on Thursday, September 24, at Anvil Centre. The event will feature Patrick Johnstone of Community First and Daniel Fontaine of New West Progressives.
The debate will focus on topics important to businesses, employers, investors and residents, including economic growth, local business, commercial taxes, housing, workforce attraction, public safety, transportation, infrastructure, investment and development.
Community members can also submit questions in advance, with selected questions addressed during the debate.
The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m., with registration from 5 to 6 p.m. Admission is free, but advance registration is required and space is limited. Light refreshments will be provided.
Chamber members have priority registration through September 7, followed by public registration from September 8 to 23.
The New Westminster Police Department is asking the public for dash-cam footage following a reported road rage incident in the city on September 2.
Police received a report in the afternoon from a motorist who said another driver exited his vehicle and brandished a weapon during an interaction near Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street.
The incident was reported at approximately 4:15 p.m. The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his 40s with a slim build, moustache and balding hair. He was reportedly driving a red Dodge Ram.
Police are now looking for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured relevant footage while driving through the area.
Residents with dash-cam recordings from 4:10 to 4:20 p.m. on September 2 are asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411 and request to speak with the Watch Commander.
Callers should reference File #26-15256 when providing information.
