Our City Our Home
New Westminster is taking steps to address the housing crisis by updating key regulations that shape housing development in the city. As part of its commitment to increasing housing options, the City is revising its Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw, which dictate where and what types of housing can be built.
Several major initiatives are underway:
Transit-Oriented Development: Higher-density housing is planned near the city’s five SkyTrain stations—22nd Street, New Westminster, Columbia, Sapperton, and Braid—following new provincial requirements.
Townhouse Expansion: The City is working to allow more townhouses in additional areas while simplifying the approval process.
Infill Housing: A proposal to permit multiplexes of up to six units on lots that currently allow single-family homes, suites, and laneway houses.
Non-Profit Affordable Housing: Efforts are being made to streamline approvals for non-profit organizations to build affordable rental housing.
To ensure community input, the City is seeking feedback on these changes, inviting residents to share their thoughts, concerns, and suggestions. The responses will help refine the policies that guide housing development in New Westminster.!
