For a group of young dancers in New Westminster, this summer’s trip to Scotland is about much more than competition. It is about perseverance, passion, and finally getting the chance to live out a dream years in the making.
The Kathleen Carlsen Dancers Society (KCDS) is fundraising throughout May to help send dancers, ages 5 to 18, to compete in several Highland Games across Scotland this July.
Before the pandemic, these trips were a tradition every two years. But for many dancers, those plans were suddenly put on hold. Some were still in middle school when they first began preparing for the journey. Now, as some approach graduation, they are finally getting the opportunity they have waited years for.
Behind every performance are countless hours of practice, commitment, and support from families who have worked hard to keep these dancers moving forward.
Throughout May, dancers and parents will be out in the community fundraising through events like the Queen’s Park Garage Sale and the Hyack Parade. They are also collecting bottles, cans, clothing donations, and hosting a 50/50 draw to help cover transportation and competition costs in Scotland.
For many families, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity — and every donation, ticket purchase, and act of support helps bring that dream closer.
How You Can Help
🎟 Support the 50 50 Draw:
Single tickets are $2, with bundle options also available.
Visit the KCDS “Send Us to Scotland” raffle page to purchase tickets and support the dancers.
💛 Make a Direct Donation:
Direct donations are also being accepted through the same fundraising page.
♻️ Donate Bottles, Cans, or Clothing:
KCDS dancers and families are happy to arrange pickup for recyclables and clothing donations throughout the community.

For these dancers, Scotland represents years of hard work, resilience, and dedication. And thanks to the support of the New Westminster community, that dream is finally within reach.

This is the third edition of the tour, and it is designed to be welcoming and beginner friendly, making it easy for riders of all experience levels to join in.
After the meet up, riders will head out together, with kickstands up at 2:00 p.m., for a group ride through the area.
