The New West Progressives made a major announcement during a live video event last night, confirming that Councillor Daniel Fontaine will be their candidate for Mayor in the upcoming 2026 municipal election. The declaration signals the start of an early campaign push by the local political group, aiming to challenge the current City Hall leadership.
Fontaine, who has served on City Council since 2022, was introduced during the event as a candidate focused on change, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. The New West Progressives emphasised their goal to bring a new direction to the city, highlighting concerns about public safety, infrastructure, and housing affordability.
The announcement event included enthusiastic speeches from party members and supporters, all rallying around Fontaine’s candidacy. With over a year to go before election day, the campaign is expected to ramp up with policy proposals and community engagement.
This marks Fontaine’s first bid for mayor, though he has been a prominent voice in local politics, known for his critiques of the current administration and calls for more balanced governance.
As the municipal race begins to take shape, Fontaine's early entry sets the tone for what could be a highly competitive election season in New Westminster.
