Hazardous wildfire smoke has settled over the Lower Mainland, pushing air quality in several communities, including New Westminster, to “very high risk” levels. On Wednesday, the Air Quality Health Index in the region hit 10-plus, the highest possible rating.
The Metro Vancouver Regional District warns the advisory could last several days as wind patterns continue to drive smoke south. Sources include fires near Hope, Whistler, the Cariboo, northern Washington, and as far away as the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
In New Westminster, the school district has cancelled all outdoor activities to protect students. Residents are urged to remain indoors, close windows and doors, and use air purifiers or HVAC systems with clean filters. If outdoor activity is unavoidable, a well-fitted N95 mask is recommended.
The smoke coincides with unusually hot weather, creating additional health risks. Officials say children, seniors, pregnant people, outdoor workers, and anyone with pre-existing conditions are most at risk. To reduce impacts, health experts recommend staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous exercise outdoors, and seeking out designated clean-air spaces.
Across B.C., more than 150 wildfires remain active, with nearly 60 still out of control.
