💸Minimum Wage Increase Sparks Ongoing Affordability Debate in Metro Vancouver

A new minimum wage increase is coming to British Columbia — but affordability advocates say many workers still won’t earn enough to comfortably cover basic living costs in Metro Vancouver.

Starting June 1, B.C.’s minimum wage will rise to $18.25 per hour, an increase tied to inflation adjustments by the provincial government. Officials say the change is meant to help workers manage rising expenses like food, transportation, and everyday essentials.

But according to Living Wage BC, the increase still falls far short of what many families actually need to live comfortably in the region. The organization estimates the current living wage in Metro Vancouver sits at $27.85 per hour, reflecting the growing costs of rent, groceries, utilities, childcare, and transportation.

The conversation hits especially close to home in New Westminster, where many residents work in retail, hospitality, caregiving, and service industries while navigating one of the country’s most expensive housing markets.

Advocates say the issue is about more than wages alone — it’s about financial stability, dignity, and making sure workers can afford to live in the communities they help support every day.

💙 New Westminster Hosting Free Seniors Week Resource Fair at Century House

Looking for resources, support, or ways to stay connected while aging well? The Partners in Aging Resource Fair is returning to Century House on June 2 as part of Seniors Week in New Westminster.

Hosted by New Westminster Seniors Services, the free community event will bring together more than 20 local organizations offering information and support focused on healthy, independent living.

Visitors can explore services related to housing, food programs, aging in place, future planning, technology, wellness, and social opportunities — all designed to help seniors and families navigate everyday life with confidence and connection.

The welcoming afternoon event will also feature refreshments and treats, creating a relaxed space for residents to ask questions, meet local service providers, and learn about programs available in the community.

The fair takes place from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Century House, with free admission and no registration required. All ages are welcome to attend.
