A concerning situation in downtown New Westminster turned out to be something else — but not without raising alarm.

On April 21 around 1:00 p.m., police received multiple reports of a man seen with what appeared to be a handgun along Clarkson Street. Officers quickly responded after both an in-person report and a 9-1-1 call described a similar suspect.

Using an NWPD drone, officers were able to safely observe the individual and determine that the object was actually a butane lighter designed to look like a handgun.

Police say the use of the drone helped avoid a much larger and higher-risk response, allowing officers to assess the situation more safely.

The man was later spoken to by police and voluntarily surrendered the lighter for disposal.
