Money can be one of life's most challenging topics—but it doesn't have to be.

Residents are invited to a relaxed and welcoming Coffee & Conversation event in New Westminster on Tuesday, July 7, where the focus will be on understanding the connection between money, relationships, and mindset.

Rather than a formal presentation, the gathering is designed as an open conversation where participants can explore how their beliefs about money are shaped, how those beliefs influence financial decisions, and ways to feel more confident navigating today's financial landscape.

Hosted by Lila Day, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones, alongside Kathy Hamilton, a Money Psychology Coach, and Neil Hamilton, a Relationship Negotiator, the discussion will also touch on how relationships can affect financial choices and communication.

The event will be held in a small-group setting with coffee, tea, and light refreshments provided. Organizers emphasize that this is not a sales event, but an opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with others in a supportive environment.

A call about a suspected grenade at a Queensborough dog park prompted a police response on Canada Day before officers determined the object was a novelty lighter.

The New Westminster Police Department said officers were called to Ryall Park at about 10 a.m. on July 1 after someone reported seeing what appeared to be a grenade inside the dog park area. Police attended the scene and secured the area while they investigated.

Officers used a police drone and searched the park to locate the suspicious object. After examining it, police determined it was a butane lighter designed to look like a grenade.

The park reopened shortly after officers confirmed there was no threat.

Police said novelty lighters shaped like weapons can create fear and lead to emergency responses when they are mistaken for real weapons. The department has previously warned the public about the risks posed by such items, which can result in distress, 9-1-1 calls and significant police resources being deployed.

Police thanked park users for their patience while officers worked in the area.
