Drivers Urged to Slow to 30 km/h in School Zones

If you’re driving through New Westminster this fall, take note: school zone hours have been extended to better protect kids, families, and the many people who use our schools well beyond the final bell.

As of the 2025–26 school year, the speed limit in school zones is 30 km/h from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on school days. This is a big shift from the old 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. hours, and it means drivers need to stay alert during early morning drop-offs, after-school programs, evening sports, and even playground time.

New Westminster made the change after reviewing safety concerns and looking at what other cities are doing. Since our city shares its longest border with Burnaby—where the same hours are already in place—this update keeps things consistent and easier for drivers while putting safety first. Council approved the change in May 2025, and new signage was installed over the summer, ready for back-to-school.

The City is also investing in traffic calming near schools, adding features like speed humps, reflective signs, curb extensions, and improved pick-up and drop-off areas. Together, these updates reflect New Westminster’s commitment to safer, family-friendly neighbourhoods.
