New Westminster, you might want to take a second look at your toonies.

A new commemorative $2 coin celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion began circulating across Canada on August 24. That means it could start making its way into everyday transactions here in New West—from a coffee stop on Columbia Street to a quick purchase at a local shop or market.

The Royal Canadian Mint has released three million of the commemorative coins: one million uncoloured and two million colourized. They are entering circulation gradually as banks and businesses replenish their supplies of $2 coins.

So what makes this toonie special?

The coin commemorates the Legion's 100 years of service, with a design featuring a Legion member offering a poppy to a child and their mother. It also includes the Legion crest, maple leaves, the years 1926–2026, and the words “Memoriam Eorum Retinebimus”—“We Will Remember Them.”

The design was created by Vladyslava Pashchenko, while the other side features the effigy of King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

And here's the fun part: you don't have to visit a museum to see it.

The next time you're out around New Westminster and someone hands you a couple of toonies in change, take a peek. One of them might look a little different.

You could be holding a tiny piece of Canada's history—right in the palm of your hand.

Members of the New Westminster Police Department are gearing up for an eight-day cycling journey to help raise funds for childhood cancer research.

The NWPD riders are taking part in the Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast, an annual ride that brings law enforcement members together to raise awareness and funds for children and families affected by cancer.

This year's fundraising goal is $650,000, and there is still time for the community to contribute to the campaign.

Residents can also show their support by following the Tour de Coast journey online and cheering on the riders as they set off on September 11.

The ride is part of a larger effort to support childhood cancer research while bringing police and communities together behind an important cause.
