Fire crews in New Westminster were called to a serious apartment fire on the evening of Saturday, August 23, 2025, forcing road closures and drawing a large emergency response.
The blaze broke out shortly after 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of 8th Street and 4th Avenue. Police quickly shut down surrounding roads to allow firefighters to access the scene and deploy equipment.
Photos shared on social media show smoke and flames coming from a multi-storey apartment building as crews worked to contain the fire. Fire trucks and emergency vehicles filled the streets as hoses were stretched across the roadway to tackle the blaze from multiple angles.
While the full extent of the damage has not been confirmed, the fire appeared to affect several units in the building. It is not yet known whether any residents were injured or displaced.
The New Westminster Police Department and BC Emergency Health Services were also on scene. Authorities have not released details about the cause of the fire, but updates are expected from the New Westminster Fire Department as the investigation continues.
Commuters in Uptown New Westminster will face another week of delays as construction on Sixth Street has been extended. Originally scheduled to finish on August 22, the project is now expected to be completed by August 29.
The work is taking place on the east side of Sixth Street between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. During this time, traffic is restricted to one-way flow at all hours, creating slower travel times, especially during peak commuting periods. Drivers are advised to plan ahead by allowing extra time, considering alternate routes, and watching for traffic control signage in the construction area.
Transit users are also feeling the impact, with at least one bus stop relocated to accommodate the work. Passengers should check updated stop locations and factor in additional travel time.
The City of New Westminster has acknowledged the disruption and is asking for patience as crews work to complete the improvements.
