Sometimes, building a stronger community starts with something wonderfully simple: saying hello.
The Will You Be My Neighbour? New West Belonging Challenge has been quietly encouraging New Westminster residents to do just that — connect with the people and places around them through 14 simple acts of kindness, curiosity, and community.
The challenge has already been underway, but there is still time to take part. Residents have until September 7, 2026 to complete their challenge brochure and return it for a chance to win more than $600 in local gift cards and prizes from Uptown and Downtown businesses.
The activities are intentionally simple. You might meet a neighbour, explore a new local space, share food, learn a phrase in another language, or simply do something kind for someone else. Together, these small moments can help make a big city feel a little more like home.
Brochures are available at locations including New Westminster Family Place, Anvil Centre, Century House, New Westminster Public Library, Queensborough Community Centre, and təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic Centre. Completed brochures can also be returned at designated drop boxes at these locations.
Winners will be announced at the New West Farmers Market on September 17, from 3 to 7 p.m.
It may be a challenge, but there’s no complicated goal to reach — just 14 opportunities to connect.
And perhaps that is the point: sometimes belonging begins with one small hello.
Pick up a brochure, take the challenge, and discover a few more reasons to feel at home in New West.
Drivers in New Westminster should prepare for a major traffic change as the Front Street Truck Route will close between Begbie Street and East Columbia Street starting Monday, August 31.
The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately four months while crews complete a retaining wall as part of the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project.
Regular traffic will be detoured to Columbia Street during the closure. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time when travelling through the area.
Despite the closure, Front Street Mews will remain open, and access to downtown businesses will be maintained.
The City of New Westminster says the closure is part of the Province of B.C.'s Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project. Questions, comments and complaints about the work should be directed to the project team.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternate routes while construction is underway.
