Crime severity in New Westminster remained stable in 2025, according to the latest Crime Severity Index (CSI) released by Statistics Canada, with the city continuing to report a lower overall crime severity than the provincial average.
The city's overall CSI was 83.9 in 2025, a slight 0.4 per cent increase from 83.6 in 2024. Despite the modest rise, the result indicates that the overall severity of police-reported crime has remained largely unchanged over the past year. New Westminster's CSI also remains below British Columbia's overall CSI of 92.4.
The Crime Severity Index measures both the volume and seriousness of crimes reported to police, assigning greater weight to more serious offences and factoring in successful case resolutions. Unlike traditional crime rates, it provides a broader picture of crime trends and their impact on public safety.
Statistics Canada data also shows that non-violent crime severity declined by 4 per cent, dropping from 83.8 to 80.4, while the violent crime severity index increased by 11.2 per cent, rising from 84.9 to 94.4.
Looking at longer-term trends, New Westminster's overall CSI has generally declined over the past five years, moving from 93 in 2021 to 84 in both 2024 and 2025, despite year-to-year fluctuations.
Orange cream is making a comeback this summer, and Starbucks is embracing the nostalgic flavour with a limited-time lineup of new beverages now available at locations across Canada, including New Westminster.
Launched on July 28, the seasonal collection features five orange cream-inspired drinks that blend citrus and vanilla flavours reminiscent of classic creamsicle treats.
The lineup includes the Orange Cream Cold Brew, Iced Orange Cream Latte, Iced Orange Cream Matcha, Iced Orange Cream Chai, and the Orange Cream Frappuccino Blended Beverage. Each drink offers a different take on the signature orange-and-vanilla combination, from bold coffee to refreshing tea and frozen favourites.
The launch follows Starbucks' recent revival of another fan-favourite summer beverage, continuing the company's focus on seasonal offerings that tap into familiar flavours.
The Orange Cream collection is available for a limited time at participating Starbucks locations while supplies last.
