The New Westminster Police Department warns residents about phone scams where fraudsters spoof official phone numbers (including the NWPD non-emergency line) and impersonate police officers. Scammers may give a fake name and badge number and pressure victims to share personal or financial information.
How to protect yourself
Do not give personal or banking details over the phone.
Do not respond to threats or intimidation. Hang up.
Verify the caller by contacting NWPD directly at 604-525-5411 — do not call a number the caller gives you.
Report suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
“No legitimate police officer will ever demand personal or banking information over the phone,” said Sergeant Andrew Leaver. If you get a suspicious call, hang up and verify.
The long-awaited Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project is nearing completion, with the new bridge set to open by Christmas 2025 through a four-phase rollout designed to ensure a smooth traffic transition.
Originally planned for 2023, the project faced delays but will soon replace the 88-year-old bridge with a safer, modern structure featuring 10% wider lanes, a centre median, and the ability to expand from four to six lanes. The new bridge will also include dedicated pedestrian and cyclist paths and improved connections between New Westminster and Surrey.
During the transition, both bridges will close temporarily to complete tie-ins at King George Boulevard and McBride Boulevard. Once open, motorists can expect:
In New Westminster: new links to McBride Boulevard and East Columbia Street
In Surrey: updated access to King George Boulevard
The bridge will also receive a new Indigenous name, developed in partnership with the Musqueam and Kwantlen First Nations, and feature a public art installation under the Highway 17–Old Yale Road overpass.
