Looking for a simple way to make a difference in your neighbourhood before summer ends? New Westminster residents can take part in the City's Catch Basin Marking Program and help raise awareness about protecting local waterways.

Through the program, residents can borrow a free kit and paint yellow fish symbols beside designated catch basins in their neighbourhood. The hands-on activity offers a chance to get outdoors while highlighting an important environmental message.

Catch basins collect rainwater and surface runoff from streets before carrying it to local waterways without treatment. Pollutants such as paint, soap, oil and chemicals that enter a catch basin can therefore make their way into aquatic ecosystems, potentially affecting fish and wildlife.

The yellow fish symbols serve as a reminder that what goes down a street drain can ultimately reach local waterways.

Residents interested in participating can borrow a marking kit and help spread the message in their community. Kits must be borrowed by Thursday, October 15.

More information about the Catch Basin Marking Program and how to borrow a kit is available through the City of New Westminster.

Got items piling up at home that can't go into your regular recycling bin? The City of New Westminster is making it easier to give those hard-to-recycle materials a second life with a Recycling Pop-Up this Saturday, August 29.

Residents can bring accepted items to the Public Works Yard at 901 First St. between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The pop-up will accept a range of materials, including:

  • Soft- and hardcover books

  • Soft, flexible plastics

  • Styrofoam food trays

  • Textiles and clothing

  • Small household appliances, such as toasters

  • Small scrap metals, including pots and broken tools

The event offers residents a convenient opportunity to clear out items that don't belong in their regular household recycling while helping keep reusable and recyclable materials out of the landfill.

The Recycling Pop-Up takes place Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Public Works Yard.
